I am new here and the new owner of a classic 1969 18? starcraft offshore cruiser. I was out today and noticed an odd noise when trying to start my motor. There was a pause then a turn and a spinning noise after . The starter was not getting high enough to catch the fly wheel to start the engine. I was able to start it manually with some rope. The starter wheel at the sop looks a bit warn but it did start a few times after stalling out. But after a few times I had to take the cover off and start it manually again. It has also been idling really slow below 500rpm almost not registering. I am new here and I hope someone can help. I love this boat. I was able to purchase it from the original owner and it is in great shape. I learned how to ski on this boat. Hope there are some adjustments I can make my self if possible.

Sounds like your starter is not spinning up the drive gear. Is your battery fully charged, are your battery cable connections clean and tight? Have you checked the voltage to the starter when you turn the key to start?

It could definitely be the battery. May have left the key start in start position?that could drain the power? Yes the starter was not spinning up the drive gear. It would move and I could do it easily by hand. Also my idle is very low and the red starter shifter?(small lever below throttle ) doesn?t seem to do anything to change my idle. I believe it did before is there a simple way to adjust it.. Your advice is greatly appreciated. I will get a new battery. Thank you.
