just not sure exactly how that works. does it just make the cable easier or harder to move throttle on engine? any help would be appreciated.

Not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean the friction adjustment on the remote throttle/shift control at the front of the boat? If so, yes.

Re: throttle friction adjustment on johnson outboard

I have a 15 HP 1999 Johnson Model J15TESSM on my sailboat (some searches show it as 2000), and I am having trouble with no throttle resistance. I have to hold the throttle all the time or it goes back down to idle.
I am of the belief that the knob at the end of the tiller handle is supposed to allow the tension to be adjusted for the throttle to stay in-place (cruise control), but after disassembling it, I cannot see what is wrong. The parts schematics on-line are of no value at all. They show the parts, but no clue to the proper assembly. I would like to order a part, but don?t know if one is defective.
My guess is the spade, which is attached to the threaded knob is supposed to do something or attach to something, but I don?t know what.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I found only one other post related to this, but it did not shed any light.
Thanks!
Gerry
