i will eventually get to the point, promise! but love to tell a tale:
nearly 10 years ago at my favorite weekly auction- [where lots can still be bought from ?1 [$2] upwards, occasionally 50p]- my eye and then wallet were taken by a pretty looking but sorry speedboat on dodgy trailer with mercury 500 stuck on the back.
this auction is a 100 mile from suitable water so interest was low and the lot became a 'must have' for ?180 [$290], with tow hitch and pumped up tyres away it went.
loads has happened since but nothing to this nautical project except the chassis started to disintegrate so welded 4" squre tube backbone through the middle and fitted a 3 3/4" tube inside, which telescope adjusts/locks 6' forward if required.
having lost a home for years i finally at 60 years old moved recently to Beccles on UK east coast with loads of water and permanant resting place for me and the 'treasures'. an aquaintance noticed boat in the yard, checked it and this is spec:

1972 mercury 500, thunderbolt ignition, serial no 3237755.
the lower gear hsg is 'bald' where bearings sit within, casing worn away both sides and bearings outer races visible with substantial corrosion.
there are signs of further impact damage in this region so presumably easiest thing is to replace assy? looks to be 4 fixings to upper casing, it is seized solid down below though engine appears servicable.
i am a total rookie on outboards and 2 strokes, though a mechanical engineer by trade and know snapon from pretenders or a birmingham screw driver.
*have you carried out this procedure, any snags, special tools?
*do you have a suitable housing assy with/without prop- how much?
IMPORTANT: did these housings change much or are they interchageable for years??

the plan is a leisurely jaunt up the waveney to geldeston lock for a pint.
if you can help or give constructive advice to achieve this objective at nominal cost please reply. tadj
