Yeah, switch to a pulse pump set up. My motor is an 82 evinrude (E150TRXCNM), goto the evinrude parts page and look up the fuel pumps. This will give you an idea of what you need/are getting into.
I believe that you will have to work throught the pulse line issue. The older (1982) pumps bolt right to the side of the block and get their pulse from the hole in the back of the pump where it attaches to the block. The VRO type pumps get their pulse from a hose connected to a hose barb on the side of the block.
