Just got motor repaired with new water pump, solenoid, ignition wires, spark plugs. Motor ran great at 5 mph for a couple hours then started stalling every fifteen minutes. Then the over heat alarm sounded different then i remember. this time low volume screeching. I finally increased to go on a plane and it stalled. hard to restart but stalled again putting gear. water was streaming cool, plugs not fouled. towed in.

Got home started up fine in neutral with occasional sputter. can't figure out why it would not start. any ideas?

Thanks,
erik

A constant warning horn is for an overheat. When you did all this work on the engine, did you put new thermostats in? A new water pump will not prevent an overheat if the stat on one head is stuck shut. If the engine overheats excessively, the piston can expand to the point where the engine will slow down or even lock up inside the cylinder.

i don't know if the mechanic installed a new thermostat. i will ask him. maybe thats why cold water constantly came out of the tell tale. i take it if its stuck closed, water still pumps through the tell tale?

thanks

If the impeller is working, water always comes out of the telltale unless it is plugged for some reason. A strong telltale is no assurance that the engine is running cool, only that the impeller working.

There are two stats, one controls the temp on each head.

The two stats are located in the thermostat housing just below the exhaust bubble at the rear of the engine. There are two hoses that go from each head to that housing. Expect to skin a few knuckles while replacing those stats on that model. You can see an exploded factory parts diagram of that assembly at: epc.brp.com

Did you ever figure out what your issue was? my boat is stalling when I put it in gear. seems like when it warms up things are fine
