My tachometer needle jumps around but the engine is running smoothly. Where does the Tach gets it's signal from? Any suggestions where to start looking to find this problem? Engine is a 5.7 GI-D. Thanks.

If this is an outboard, there are 2 windings on the stator one is for the tach, the other for everything else. Look in your manual and it should show you which one it is.

Usually from the negative terminal on the ignition coil. On really late model stuff it comes from the engine contol computer.

Mine was doing that too, and I found that the ground wire was not making real good contact (right on the terminal at the back of the tach).
