I have a 1974 Mercruiser I outdrive with a crack in the lower unit. It?s about an inch below the anti cavitation plate and an inch from the front of the unit incase my picture doesn?t post. There was some putty of some kind covering it like JB weld and it flaked off. Nothing is leaking yet but there was a lot of corrosion under the putty I wire brushed off. What is in this area inside, is it anything to worry about?

Re: Cracked Lower Unit

That looks like a freeze crack in the forward void in front of the shift shaft.

I would drain the gear lube and pressure check the unit to be safe. If it pressure checks alright, make sure it's sanded smooth so there isn't any cavitation directed to the water pick up right behind it.

I thought I was the only one that had a customer with a 1974 Alpha I. Good picture!
