steering play

i have a 1989 galaxy 19ft..it has a new steering cable on it but has alot of play..at speed its not bad but at lower speed and idle its horrible to control..if anybody can help it would be greatly apreciated....
if it helps it has a 3.0 mercruiser,alpha gen 1 outdrive

That's called V-hull wander...
Get used to it, 'n don't counter steer so much...

Ok so what yr saying is its normal to have play....is it normal to have a 1/4 turn either way of play....new to a v-hull so just want to make sure its nothing that can be adjusted out...thank you for the help sir

There is normally some freeplay in the steering, but not 1/4 turn either way. I'd check to see that your new cable steering is rigged correctly and that the mechanism at the wheel end isn't worn. Bondo is correct that V-hulls tend to wander.

The wandering part is true found that out first trio on the water...the rack and pinion is brand new...and thank you to for the info

I had same issue on my deep v 21' I/O merc ..... I took it in to get inspected and mechanics moved the outdrive left to right, pointing out that steering wheel didn't move, like it should. They put in new gimbal bearing. took virtually all the noticable the slop out...not cheap

great...well i just got this boat last week and plan to pull motor and outdrive and rebuild so new gimbal bearing will go in also. thanks for the info guys.im sure i will be back with more questions over the winter
