L-Drive and general Trim question

I have a temperamental trim system on my 89 L-Drive. Always goes up, sometimes goes down. The motor was original so I replaced it. Relays are good (I switched them with no change). Wiring seems ok. Two questions.
1. What does the pressure switch do and what would happen if it were bad?
(Can I bypass it - seem to be hard to get?)
2. How can I test the up/down switch?

So far the L-Drive hasn't been the evil bastard folks have branded it, but the season ain't over.

Anyone?

Re: L-Drive and general Trim question

Well for folks who might find this thread in a search, the pressure switch seems to turn on the idiot light when the drive is full down - nothing else.
My issue turned out to be a loose wire near the switch itself. The motor is a simple reversing polarity type, so hooking the two wires to the battery in reversing order tests both directions of the motor. Testing the switch is as simple as checking power at the relays.
