starter question

So I recently replaced the a starter on my Mercruiser I/O with a new sierra starter. It works great but when it has been running a while and it doesn't want to start or turn over. Once I even had to bump it to get it to start. Anyone know of an issue that is fixable or do I need to return the starter?

Thanks,

Re: starter question

Check and clean all the connections, especially battery connections. You need a low impedance path from the starter body to the battery negative and from the battery positive to the starter solenoid. Also make sure you have a good 12 volts or battery voltage at solenoid wire that engages starter when you turn the key. Starter needs a good ground to block and block to battery negative. Resistance is lowest when cold so heat can impact all this. Sounds like loose connection.

How is the battery? If you hit it and it works may be a sticking solenoid or poor contact. I don't think you can fix that.

Re: starter question

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... I'd guess it's a Wiring problem...
Corrosion at the connections maybe...
Don't forget the Grounds too...

Remove, sand, clean to shiney metal, 'n reinstall...
Then slather abit of Grease on 'em,...
It'll keep 'em dry, 'n corrosion free, longer...

Re: starter question

thanks the connections seem to be tight but I will try brushing them and greasing them before i take out the starter and return it.
