i have 2 1976 evinrudes both run fine on muffs but in the water under load they won't run but idle i rebuilt the carbs on one and got it to open up for about 5 min. then slowly dropped off now that its home theres black oze under the motor. boat did sit a couple of years but ran perfect before its making me very frustrated would appreciate any help don't want to put the other motor on because it does the same thing except it doesn't bog out when throttled in just won't pick up

Lack of backpressure on the underwater exhaust enables it to run fine on muffs then crap out under load.

What's the compression?

It's not an unusual phenomenon, with a motor that's sat around for awhile, to run fine a little while then start having fuel related issues. I guess stuff gets loosened up in there & you get carb obstructions or something. check the quality of the gasoline and make sure the tank is clean & free from debris and water.

The black ooze is unburnt engine oil dripping from the exhaust. Look for the thread on "decarb" in the engine faq section of iboats.
