I've heard that the older mercury outboards are really tough and dependable. I'm looking to repower my boat that has a tired worn out 1987 force 125. Any reason why the older mercury wouldn't be a good swap?

The older mercs suffer from bad wiring and expensive ign components. Other than that they are good motors, if not used in salt water. Salt water will shorten their lives, obviously.

Thanks Chris. I also heard about the expense of rebuilding one of these motors. But on the other hand once its done you've got a motor that will last. and the one i'm considering is a fresh water motor with no signs of corrosion. oh yeah i didn't mention that it's a 115 hp.

The 115HP inline six is a proven design. Make sure you get controls and boat wiring with it as the Force's will likely not work.
