i have the first timing set between 3 and 4 deg...my problem is setting the max advance...put it in gear to throttle up to set timing 21deg...and it dies???? i have a manual..ben following book step by step and im stuck here.


Could anyone give advice on what it maybe its driving me nuts.

Mine is a V6 88 and my timing is adjusted at cranking speed only(motor not running).Not sure about the 73 inline.Double check if motor should be running or cranking only.Also if it's tilted up it won't go into gear(safety shut off).....I think.

The motor doe not need to be running to set max advance. Remove spark plugs 2-6, install them into their boots and tape the bases together and ground them tp the block. Now With timing light on #1 plug, advance throttle all the way. Jumper starter solenoid to crank motor and adjust max spark advance to 21* BTDC. Your idle pickup timing is correct, if you observe a 4-6* BTDC ign timing just as the carbs are about to open.

i got to thinking...my boat wont start in gear. when u and everyone else talks about the throttle wide open ..is that my warm up lever or the one u move to put into gear...i know is a dumb question..

Wide open throttle or WOT is only to be attempted with the boat in the water , in gear and under load.
If your motor is running properly, and propped correctly, you should be able to achieve and run at Mfger's recommended wot range all day long.
Not recommended if you want your motor to last a long time though...

You need a manual...Chris is saying to advance throttle lever on engine (not at forward control).crank engine while testing timing....not running engine.Take all plugs out except #1.Never time engine without a manual...or you can just wing it and blow the motor.

yeah bro i have a manual...i think i put that in first thread...manual says...shift into gear and advance the throttle until t-marks align with 21deg and adj screw....prob is i want to check and c if its in time...but it wont stay running ...when u put it in gear to preform the test it dies.....so hummmm

Recommend you re-read my post. Motor only needs to crank to set timing.
