85 40hp Evinrude Acceleration Issues

This is an odd thing that happens but I put the 17ft boat in the water, start the motor very easily and then for the next 15-20 minutes or so it runs great, smooth and revs fine. Then all of sudden it reduces speed and won't go past half throttle, like it is running on one cylinder though still smooth without misfiring. If I push the throttle to full it tries for a second to rev but then stays half throttle. When I rev it in idle it runs just fine but back under a load...no go. It seems like not enough gas is getting through... Finally when I was approaching the dock and ramp at slow idle it was stalling - again seemed like no gas...

Some thoughts were:

* Carburetor issues though both were recently taken off and cleaned. All seemed to be clear.
* Crack in cylinder so when it heats up it loses compression but that should have happened much quickly than 20 minutes. It is not overheating as water pump is working fine.
* Acceleration linkeage has no slippage.
* Could it be a faulty fuel pump? Checked the flow to carbs and both were strong. Could the pump lose its efficiency after a while?
* New fuel and tank cap is loose for air
* Fuel hoses are fine (no leakage) and I have fixed some faulty wiring

I am not an expert engine mechanic but fairly handy so am trying to get some guidance so I can feel confident about going out with the family. I will tackle most anything...

Any input is much appreciated!! Thanks.

Check your spark with a timing light when it does this. It sounds like you are dropping a cylinder due to a coil that overheats and breaks down.

Fog the carb/s with mixed fuel and see if it will act better or there is no change. If it tries to to get up and go, then we know it's a fuel problem. Process of elimination. good luck

Thanks guys! It gives me some work for the weekend. I also read to check the fuel primer bulb to make sure it isn't going soft though I don't think it does...

The bulb will go semi soft after it starts. The fuel pump takes over from there. Get a temporary clear fuel line from pump to carbs. Look for bubbles indicating a leak in fuel system. Post back your results! Good luck.

I finally got it back out and yes the bulb was semi soft and interesting enough this time the enging did not reduce speed after 45 mintures of trying. What it did do at times is become delayed in accelaration after pushing the throttle down. Though I squeezed the fuel bulb as that was happening and it actually seemed to help. Also when de-accelerating it did it in spurts and not very smoothly.

Linkeage needs greasing maybe? I will be taking it out again this weekend and will see what happens this time and then maybe do the clear lines as well.
Thanks again!!!
