I have a 1980 50hp mercury. 4 cyl. It will start and idle fine. When I put it in gear it will stall. I can give it a little bit of throttle. But if I try to go it stalls...

any ideas....

Thanks

You need to rebuild your carbs and fuel pump. It is likely that it is not getting enough fuel. Get a manual if you do not have one already. If you are new to outboards it will help you through the rebuilds.

Do you find that you need to keep the fast idle up to keep it running? That typically means that you are running on one carb. If you don't run your motor out of fuel every time at the end of the day, you run the risk of sticking your float needles closed, the rubber tip in the needle swells and gets stuck in the seat. Sounds like a rebuild or a cleaning is in order, but not a bad job though and the kits are cheap. If you can squeeze your primer ball and it clears up, it's your fuel pump.

I have the exact same issue, rebuilt the carbs, did a full tuneup but I have not checked the fuel pump. To be honest I have no idea where it would even be. I was told by a couple people that this model did not have one and also was told to check something called the "Power Pack". I'm quite new to the outboard world. Any help would be SO greatly appreciated.

I have same motor and same issue and I don't see a fuel pump unless its built in to the carbs

The fuel pumps are indeed part of the carbs themselves. I have this engine as well and find it fairly easy to work on. It is very possible that only one carb is getting fuel to allow it to idle and the other is not. Could be as simple as the needles need taken out and cleaned. Don't take much gunk to plug one of those neeldes.
