Best way to repair hole in top of boat

This weekend, we noticed that there was a hole in the fiberglass near the ladder of our 2006 175 Sea Ray runabout. The only way I could see this happening is when pulling tubers, the line was over by the ladder and the rope popped a hole in the side of the ladder rail recessed area.

With that said, what is the best way to get this fixed. The hole is about 1 inch wide by about 2 inches long and it is a hole (not a crack). Through the top gel coat and you can see the fiberglass/substrate under the deck. Is this a project that an average person can tackle or shoud I just take it in for repair? How much do you think this would cost?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I would first try and get a piece of wood that is the same width, height, and length as the hole. Put it in and coat the inside and outside with epoxy. This will hopefully make a waterproof fix and you can use a gel-coat paste to get close to the original color. This fix will work if it is just for cosmetic reason. For a structural fix (you are going to put hardware at the spot), you will have to send a picture to figure out a better solution to fix.
