First Time Impeller/Pump Replace a few small issues....

1979 228 Mercruiser MC-I drive. I have taken apart the upper from the lower units. I notice there was no pin in the top of the drive shaft, and I thought there would be. If I was running without it, how would it affect performance and/or wear on the drive?

Also, the shift tube hanging from the upper unit seems awfully loose.......is this the way it should be?

also, the front nut on the drive came off with the stud.....should this stud be lock tighted back in?
