Hi.. My 1986 johnson 110 hp will not go all the way into foward gear.. It goes into reverse without a problem.. When I put it into foward it sounds like its skipping or not steping into gear all the way.. When I moved the linkage adjusment it got better but when you try to to go faster it starts skipping again.. I feel like the shift rod is not moving all the way into position.. It skips so bad it moves the whole shift cable.. Any ideas whats wrong? Thanks Wayne

You may be on the right track, adjusting the shifter. Disconnect the shift cable under the cowling and manually shift the mechanism. Then shift the throttle handle and see if the mechanism bolt lines up the the shift cable end under the cowling. It needs to exactly match, or it's out of adjustment. You may have to do some more adjusting of the cable adjuster.

That is a great idea... I will try tomorrow.. The other problem is it shifts fine out of the water with no load on it.. When I put it in the water today under a load it thats when it makes the noise.. I will try that with shift cable tomorrow and let you know.. Wayne

As Bob said, have you had the lower unit off recently? If so, you may have inadvertantly changed the shift rod height, it needs to be set to the correct level before reinstalling.....

Ok.. I think I got it.. Thank you Bob and Mark.. I figured it out what I did wrong when I put it together.. When I went to align the shift shaft I turned it with needle nose to make it line up but when I missed it again I turned it another 360 degrees so I was out 2 turns.. You learn something everyday.. Plus using the other trick to reset the cable worked as well so thank you everyone again for your help...
