Hello
Advice here has saved me so much time I wanted to post a few things that I have figured out this weekend about my 140hp Mercruiser. I think this advice is for new backyard mechanics but maybe it will save one person some time. We all go down the path of roses at one time
When the engine is cold, you can measure 12v at the pos terminal of the coil. Once the engine is cranked the wire heats up a bit and the voltage drops to about 9v
This may not be true in all circumstances - I am a young backyard mechanic and to find this out a patiently removed the harness and wires from my boat (thinking that the coil was wired direct by a PO and that is why the coil was failing - thought was wrong - everything was wired correct)
When the boat doesn't have spark change parts. Result - Still no Spark. Oh yeah how about the basics First. When all else fails clean the inside of the distributor with electronic parts cleaner and viola... Vrooom goes the motor.
