Bringing this motor back to life and it is in nice shape. Noticed a water leak from a water control valve on the stbd side of the block controlled by the throttle lever. Part# 394407. Investigation revealed that the leak is from the actuator seal and it looks like some guts are missing also.
Can someone tell me the purpose of this valve and its importance that I may evaluate the need to replace it.

You really need to buy a factory manual to service these motors. not aftermarket, get the one from OMC. It has things like this in it.

The diagram in the manual shows under 2000 rpm water flows in the bottom from the exhaust adapter housing and out the left port to the thermostat diaphragms. Above 2000 it comes in the left port from the htermostat diaphragms and out the right port to the overboard drain.

You won't be able to believe you ever put a wrench near your motor without it.

Thanks for the response archcycle.
You are right about the manual. Can't afford them all but those I do have I share information from on the forum.

The idea behind the cooling water valve was to cool induction air at higher loads, theoretically increasing HP. It's not needed. Search for a post by dhadley which tells exactly how to get rid of it.
