1978 mercury black max stator

how can this stator get this bad with no rust on the flywheel or any other part of the engine and would this cause hard to start condition it runs fine over certain rpm and it was not charging the battery

1. Old age.
2. If it's been struck, engine main bearings.

I'm thinking someone put a wrong stator on this motor because it is way bigger than the one cdi gave me for this motor and it looks like it was rubbing the flywheel because the rust warped it on one side

Post a picture of the rectifier or regulator, and a couple of the flywheel, and I'll tell ya what ya got.
Frankenmercs can be fun.
