1966 9.8hp wont runat low idle

i have a 1966 mercury 110 9.8 hp . it starts up fine now and will run at about 3/4 throttle just fine. when i put it at WOT sometimes it will die after about 5-10 sec. when i try to idle down it will just die. i have tried adjusting the low idle screw with it in nutural and in gear but i cant seem to get it to idle at a low rpm. to put it in gear i have to throttle down just abit put it in gear and throttle back up right away. thanks in advance for any advice.

i had it in the river tonight and same thing it wont stay running at low idle and whenit is in gear i can get it moving but i have to keep it WOT and it dosent seem like it is moving as fast as it should , the sound is alot different to.

Do you ever beach the boat? Sand in the lower intake can do that and if so you just have to rinse the impeller out. or it over heats after a while.

My 7.5 was doing something similar. I scrubbed all of the gunk out of the carburetor and replaced the needle, seat, float and gaskets. I also reworked the fuel pump while i was in there so one of the two processes did the trick.

thx for responding. i just bought the motor so i have never beached it but i did replace tbe impeller and cleaned out tbe lower unit a couple weeks ago. i have the carb apart and soaking it in cleaner over night. there is only really 1 gasket on it thats between the carb and the engine and the seal between the float bowl and the top of it other then that it is one piece. i will post how i make out when i get it back together.
