Hi! I'm looking to fix up a 1960 18hp (FD14) johnson. It has a broken transom clamp. I'm wondering if someone might be able to tell me which units would be compatible. The following site implies that a common clamp fits 1961-1965 18 & 20 hp motors, which kind of implies that they wouldn't suit a 1960.

However, I've seen some pictures and they look pretty much the same, except that the holes for the trim rod go thru on both sides on the above but are blind on one side on the 1960. Is that the only difference? I also saw a 1960 unit on ebay, but the seller doesn't ship to Canada.

Thanks!

Dave.

If you can't find a used one, try sea-way marine in Seattle (www.sea-way.com). They may or may not have a NOS item. If they do, it will most likely be unpainted.

You can answer that question by researching the transom clamps on marineengine.com. They have parts breakdowns for many motors going back that far. Simply open the parts diagrams for each year and if the part #s are the same, then you'll know which years will work for ya. This assumes that they have the diagrams for those particular motors. They have many--but not all-diagrams.

Thanks for all the suggestions, especially the one about the diagrams on marineengine.com, which I hadn't previously noticed (although I had looked elsewhere on that site and found that it only went back to 1968). I checked the diagrams, and the part numbers for the 1960 18HP clamps are 376283/376284, as are the 1955-56 15 HP and 1957-1959 clamps. The pictures indicate that the newer clamps (378156/378157) may only differ in the way the trim pin is retained, so they would probably work as long as I was able to get the trim pin assembly with them.
