Im trying to resolve a serious running issue (main thread here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=498470 ) and the trouble shooting section of the Mercruiser manual refers to an "accelerator pump" several times under my symptoms. Im not exactly up on my carburetor lingo so forgive the novice approach here but..... What the heck does it do and what happens when it fails? ...could it be my problem? Thanks.

Re: Accelerator Pump..... what is it and what happens if it fails?

the accelerator pump provides fuel upon acceleration mostly into the primary side of a 4 barrel carb ,sometimes into the secondarys on a double pumper holley. Very easy to ck. remove flame arrestor while engine is not running, disconnect throttle cable and advance throttle while looking into priamary side of carb, make sure choke is open you should see a stream of fuel while moving throttle.symptoms for a non-op accellerator pump are a hesitation upon acceleration

hope this helps
