I have a cracked 4.3 engine in my 98 fourwinns and I am in the middle of pulling the engine. I need some advise on how to pull the engine:
Here is what I have done so far:
- Removed the outdrive.
- Removed virtually all components from the engine including the 4 bolts and 2 stuts that connect the engine to the bell housing.
- Removed the intake manifold and installed a heavy duty chain between the cylinder heads for pulling the engine. The engine is almost ready to pull, but I have a major question.
Do I need to pull the engine with the bellhousing attached to the engine like a car transmission?
What is attached to the flywheel? Is there a coupling?
I highly appriciate any suggestions as I am so alone with this project
Thank you very much for your time

You might want to get a repair manual for your engine. They're invaluable for information--including answering your present questions.

I'm familiar with Mercruiser, but not Volvo-Penta.'s.

Thanks for the response. I am on my way, i guess i figured it out. You leave the bell housing attached to the boat and just pull the engine, carefully. Attached to the flywheel is a coupler. When installing the new engine is essential that the drive lines up with the coupler, basically like a clutch alignment otherwise the coupler wears prematurely.

I am looking forward riding the waves again... soon
