Can't get 115ho mercury into neutral for starting

I have a 1974 Merc tower of power with quicksilver throttle linkage and am unable to get it into neutral. I removed the throttle and inspected the internal assembly, which appears to be in good condition-well greased and free of corrosion. It has been a while since I used the boat, and never had a manual for this used setup, so don't recall the precise starting procedure. Does anyone have a simple suggestion of what I might be overlooking?

Hello and welcome to iboats.

The neutral safety switch is in the control box, not the engine. If you want to start it on the hose, you coulod disconnect the shift cable at the engine and leave the throttle cable attached so you could advance the timing to get it started, but make sure that the hose, muffs, and people are clear of the prop.

I would start by seeing if the shift lever will move into neutral with the shift cable disconnected. If not, you have a problem in the gearcase, and need to fix it.

if the problem is in the MerControl, and you want to test running condition of the motor, simply remove the prop and all other stuff on the propshaft for safety, turn the ign on, set the choke and jumper the starter solenoid, with the throttle advanced a bit.
