Merc Throttle Control

I have a 1985 170 I/O Mercrusier with a side mount throttle control. When I shift from neutral to FWD the engine dies as if I shut off the key. There is no hesitation, backfire or any indication that fuel is the issue. Is there something in the throttle contol that will shut off the engine, possibly the start switch?
