outdrive slipping at high speed

Hello got a question....I have a 1986 17' bayliner capri...2.3 aq131a 275 outdrive.....boat has been all tuned up runs great problem is when i am beginning to plane out the engine redlines outdrive seems like it slips then catchs then slips again...then i throttle back and its fine..it only does this at high speed when i am just going slow everything is ok.....took the prop off thinking i had spun the hub....the propeller shop just called the prop is fine.....any suggestions???????????

If there is no problem with the outdrive itself you might have a slipage or venting issue with your prop. Is this a new condition? Have you changed props recently? Are you trimed up to much allowing the prop to vent (some might call it cavitating)?

same prop boat sat for a few years...had it checked today at H and H propeller...they just called said it was ok...its almost like a car slipping when the clutch is bad.....could a shift cable that is over adjusted to tight maybe move the leaver to far in the outdrive when it is going to WOT....or my clutch/coupler be shot

If it's not the prop, then check the engine coupler.

Slipping is usually the propeller hub, cavitation or the cone clutch.
Since you seem sure it's not one of the first two, it's probably the cone clutch.
Could be you need to adjust the cable, but in most cases it's the cone clutch itself beeing worn out, and in need of replacement.

if the shift cable was adjusted to tight would it cause this?

This may sound REALLY stupid but I just did it. Forgot the rod that holds the lower unit up for trailoring. The lower unit won't come down that last bit and causes "cavitation" and won't accelerate after 3,000 rpms. Feels like transmission slip in a car.

The arm that holds the lower unit up ( for trailoring ) has to come completely off the boat to my understanding.
I have the 1987 Bayliner Capri Cuddy with the 2.3 aq131a 275 outdrive
