newbie needs help 89 merc 3.0 rapid popping sound in carb

I just installed the delco voyager system and took my boat out it ran great for a few hours then after running 4200 rpms for a minute or two the boat lost power and had a weird popping sound coming from the carb. It starts up but will not idle and barely moves.The oil looks good and it has new wires, cap, and button, It is a 89 maxim with the 3.0 mercruiser and alpha one drive.

Get a vacuum gauge and check engine vacuum at idle. If the needle jumps around you have bad valves. Thats what it sounds like

Sounds like you need to check and adjust the timing on your new distributor. Maybe it came loose while you were running it?
