28 SPL Evinrude shifts into neutral at half throttle.

I have a 1988 28SPL Evinrude and when I get to about half throttle it is like it shifts into neutral and the engine overrevs. Could it be the clutch on the propellar shaft is going bad? How major is it to repair?

As soon as you back off on the throttle, I'm assuming it goes back to normal? If that's the case, then y'up it sounds like prop slippage. There is a clutch dog in the gear case, but I'm not the one to tell you how much to repair. I'm replying so your question stays on the main page, otherwise it will get overlooked. How long has this been happening: is it a new problem or a new-to-you motor?

Agreed, sounds like you need to check for a spun prop hub.

I had a Nissan 8 that did that...I needed to change the rubber hub inside that prop...easy fix!

I suspected the prop hub but I have two props and they both have the problem even after having a new hub put in one of them. That is why I'm wonder if there is a slip cluth some place in the system that may be the problem.
