I have a 96 115 Evinrude oil injected motor that seems to be injecting oil but the beep does not come on when I turn the switch that indicates that it is pumping. This happened once before and after a few repeated turns of the switch it started working again. Now I cannot get it to beep any more but get smoke at idle like its pumping and have run it 10 or 20 miles with no problem. How do I fix this? I topped off the oil tank also. Thanks in advance.

running your engine to test the oil injection system is like cutting off your foot to get a splinter out. test your warning horn, all wiring and sensors. before you have a possible over heat or oil injection issue and no warning.

That beep is a self test of the Oil and overheat warning systems. If it had been an issue, the horn will sound more often. As sparkie said, test each sensor. I would think you will have the 4 wire OMS pump on that motor, so you will have "low oil in tank", "no oil in pump" and "overheat" alarms.

Thanks for your replies. I agree about the splinter but was stranded a long way from dock and had to take a chance. Does the oil resivoir ever get gumed up? Mine has never been empty nor checked to see what is in the bottom. Can I disconnect the tube at the engine and blow air backwards without damage? Thanks.

If your horn is not beeping upon startup it is malfunctioning. Test your horn to make sure it is working by grounding one of the tan sensor wires if the alarm sounds the horn is working if it doesn't it is dead. If you have the system check gauge that should also be lighting up during the self check. If your oil level is dropping while running the outboard your VRO pump is working.

Thanks Chief,
I get a loud beep when grounding the three wire buzzer and a low beep when grounding the two wire buzzer so they must be good. How do I check the pump without running the motor? No indicator light on my boat.
