1998 starter solenoid Question

what is the R terminal used for on the starter solenoid. and do i need to use it! new starter i bought dont have R terminal. what does wire do! thank You

What are you calling an R terminal. Is it the D terminal in the picture below?

If that is the terminal you are referring to, Automotive starters do not have one, and automotive starters shouldn't be used on boats. They are not ignition protected and could cause be an explosion hazard.

I just went through this. I bought an automotive one and it only had the 3 terminals, I took it back and got the correct marine one with 4 terminals. The purple wire goes to the coil, from what I've read, it sends the coil an extra 6 volts of power to help get the boat started. On my wiring diagram that I have for my boat it shows that purple wire also goes to the alternator. I didn't really think it was necessary but my boat wouldn't fire up with the automotive starter.
