Engine won't stop

Hi everyone -

Could really use some help here. I have a 2001 Moomba with a 5.7L inboard engine. I'm new to boating and have only had this boat for about 2 months.

For the first time I hooked it up to a flush adapter to run it in my driveway to check for leaks. As I went to turn it off, it wouldn't shut down! Just continued to run with the key out of the ignition (there was no kill switch). In complete panic mood of me possibly having hooked up the flush device wrong, I disconnected the battery to kill the engine. I've since learned this may have damaged my alternator.

So...thoughts on how to fix this problem?

Could I have damaged anything else?

Before I start it up again, if it won't turn off, what would be the proper way to shut it down without causing any damage?

Thanks everyone...

To shut it down, how about using the safety kill lanyard at the helm....

Re: Engine won't stop

Pull the coil wire out of the coil or distributor cap. It'll stop without spark.

Do you have a serial number for your engine?
A couple of guesses would be a faulty ignition switch, alternator, short in the wiring.
