Merc 5.7 water in cylinders... rebuilding now...

I am a new boat owner, have been around boats for years, and am a gearhead. I recently took possession of an '88 Century 20' CC with a 5.7 Merc I/O w/alum GLM exh manifolds. The prev. owner told me he had burnt up the impeller by running without water for a few seconds and had replaced it. I bought the boat with a known carb problem, which upon rebuild, seems to have taken care of that.
I have had the boat in the water twice, and running on earmuffs maybe five or six times. The first few times on earmuffs just to test the carb rebuild. The 350 never got over 140 degrees in the driveway nor while idling around, nor running mid throttle. I returned from my second outing placed the earmuffs on the outdrive and began to flush the motor. (I live in Southeast GA, and run in somewhat sandy/salty waters. I was always taught to flush and drain regardless of where I put in.) I ran the engine approx. 4 minutes to flush with earmuffs, and it began to overheat... I immediately shut it down, concerned that the impeller may be bad again or something. I then checked the oil... good. I then pulled the flash arrestor off to check the carb for sand in the filter and found milky oil in the valve cover vents... this lead me to find water in the #5, #7, and #8 cylinders. I found this by pulling all the plugs and placing cardboard on each side of the motor so that I could see which cyls were spitting out water. There were no tell tale signs on the plugs.

So... I pulled the heads, had them reworked, resurfaced, and revalved(all the valves were shot!), and am in the process of putting it all back together.

In order to not have a repeat performance... do you have any suggestions on other pieces to check?

I also was inspecting the exh manifolds and risers this evening for reassembly, and found about a cup and a half of sand in each one... some of the sand was dark, like it was burnt... Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

Oh yeah, I also inspected the valley for cracks and found none. Also the exh manifolds were dripping water at the elbows on my last outing.

Any suggestions?

You can pressure test the cooling system (10psi or so) to make sure there are no more leaks.

if the heads/gaskets were that whipped that could have easily been the source of your water intrusion, but if you do run insalt water don't rule out the exhaust manifolds/risers even of they are aluminum

any idea how old the exhaust manifolds are??

have you looked at the water shutters in the exhaust??

The manifolds are newer... maybe a few years old... I can find out. I also have not looked at the shutters as of yet. While all is apart I am planning to.

I called the previous owner. The GLM alum manifolds are 1.5 yrs old and have about 20 hrs on them prior to my ownership. This is the second time the risers have been off of the manifolds. The anodes are in good shape, other than a quick head/exh manifold mount and riser/exh manifold surface polish, I can't see why these would need replacing... I will look into the shudders though.

Just a thought was/is there any water in the oil?

With the exhaust manifold off fill up the water jacket of the manifold with acetone and let it sit. Acetone will leak through holes or cracks that water will not. If there is any dampness in the exhaust or intake ports you need a new manifold.

There is/was water in the oil. After revalving the heads and talking to the machinist, I understand that there is a possibility that water could have seeped through the spent valves if there was a good sum of water in the risers. The Exh manifolds are in good shape, no leaks. The y-pipe shutters are worn out, I ordered a set from a local dealer (dealer item only... or so I am told) and will install upon receipt. All other parts and pieces have been assembled minus the exh manifolds, risers, and elbows.

Should be up and running this weekend. Gonna do quite a few driveway test prior to putting in.

I had the same problem with an old Sea Ray that now is abandonned. I never found out what was the reason of the problem. The only thing that i didn't replaced was the pipe shutters. Please don't forget to post your results and good luck.
