Hello all boat lovers,
First I would like to say this is really a great site with so much wealth of info about boats and among other things relating to boating. I have been creeping around on here for the last few months and this is my first post. First I would like to introduce myself. I am a male in my late 40s and currently residing in Northern Virginia. I am married with one lovely four year old daughter. The three of us are very close and we prefer nothing better than spending time together. Recently the wife and I talked about maybe getting a boat so the three can spend even more time together fishing and doing water activities. We know very little about boating but we are not afraid of taking the chance. I would greatly appreciate it if you knowledgeable folks can point me to the right path; there are just so many boat companies out there I do not know where to begin your suggestion with some of the makers would be great. I don?t mind a used boat however I prefer getting a new one since I will be financing most of it.

My max budget is 30K, I am looking for a 19footer bay area salt water walkabout fishing boat but diverse enough to pull a few tubes. The boat must be an outboard and I would like the engine to be a Yamaha.

When is the best time to buy a boat?
Is it slightly less expensive out of season?
What should you expect when talking to a dealer?
Can you haggle like buying a car?

Thank you so much for your time!

P.S. I really love the Grady White Freedom 192 but obviously its way out of my budget. Possible to get a used one less than 4 year old for 30K?

I'm getting back into boating after an 11 or 12 year hiatus. You asked for opinions, I'll offer mine. You are about to venture into "unknown" territory, as in, " you have no idea" if you'll enjoy the boating world or not, so why take such an expensive risk? If I were you, I'd buy a perfect, low hour boat for HALF that much, maybe even less, run it a year and see if boating is for you. If it is, sell the used boat, lose $0 - $2K or so, and buy your $30K new boat. Why buy a $30K boat new, not enjoy it and lose $6K - $8K the first year?
My brother did this with a Harley. I told him buy used, he said no, gotta be new, sold it a year later and lost his shirt.
Alot of Harley owners are of the belief that you don't finance toys, I don't agree 100%, but there is merit to that. However, if everyone had to pay cash for toys, there would not be a single Big Boy Toy manufacturer ( Harleys, boats, ATV's), they couldn't sell enough.

Thanks TheTeacher! I am open to a used boat and may go that route if I find one I like.

You will have no problem finding a used boat you like. Go out and find a new boat you do like - then go buy it used..........
