starcraft 305 mercury v8 died when in the water now wont start

i have a starcraft 1975 mercury v8 with an inboard /outboard motor on it . we had it in the water and it ran fine . all of a sudden it died tried to fire a couple of times after that but now all we are getting is a whining sound when you try to start it .
we are new to boating although we know some people that have boats they do not know anything about working on them . we need help is this a major problem or something simple ????? :( help :(

It sounds like the starter is not engaging. Try tapping on the starter to see if it will engage and turn the motor over. if this does work your solenoid on the starter is going bad.
