I have a Mercury bigfoot 40 horsepower 4 stroke. The problem is the 20 amp fuse keeps blowing when I turn the key on from on to start. What is causing the fuse to blow.

thanks for your help

Re: Mercury Bigfoot blowing fuses

Have you or a mechanic done any work or moving things around on it just prior to the failing fuses...? If starter solenoid coil is shorted, it'll blow the fuse. Check the engine ground (big black wire coming from battery). Actually TAKE IT APART and have a look. Remove and charge the battery, sand/clean the ground post and all connections. Inspect the wires that go to the fuse, may be worn or broken, use multi-meter to help diagnose. Inspect the ignition switch behind the console for wear or corrosion including the harness, entire unit may be bad, the problem is likely in some accessory wiring at the helm or a result of a loose connection creating a short circuit somewhere along the way......good luck.
