Hello all. I have read some really really good threads on here and there is some real talent on here. So I decided to join. Well like most others on this forum I am in need of some help on my 1977 Mercury 1150 s/n 4734883. I can get the motor to crank and run and idle fine. Then all of a sudden it will just die out. Then most of the time it will let me crank it right back up and idles fine then will just suddenly die again. I took it to the water about a week ago and and for I took off and it had plenty of power and I backed off the throttle to slow down and when I went to get back into it, it kept bogging down and wouldn't rap back up, then would die like it done it the driveway. It again would let me start right back up and idle in gear back to the launch. It sounds like something electrical to me. If anyone can tell me where to begin or what to check it would be very much appreciated as I don't have the money to start swapping parts. Thanks again.

When it is just about to die, activate the choke. If this brings it back, I would explore fuel issues. Fuel pump, fuel fittings, dirty carb? (Consider that I am not a mecanic, but this has pointed me in the right direction)

Yea, the problem with trying to hit the choke is that it when it dies it dies very fast and without warning. Thats what leads me to believe it is electrical...Thanks for the reply.

A lot of times the wires near the quick connect plug break. Put a voltmeter on the non-distributor white wire on the switchbox, with the ign key on. You should see +12VDC to ground. Now turn the wheel and watch for the voltage to drop or disappear. if it does the spark is gone at that point causing your issue.

Ok thanks Chris a lot, I will try that first. I have to bring a volt meter home from work tomorrow and give it a shot. Will post on what I find out. Thanks again.
