I have a 99' c90 yamaha 2 stroke. I just replaced the impeller. I pulled the lower unit while it was in reverse. When I put the lower unit back on a couple days later (after waiting on parts) I realized it got put back in neutral. So now when in neutral it thinks it's in drive, when in drive it thinks neutral. I hope I didn't really mess something up! I was thinking maybe have it in fwd drop the lower unit put it in neutral and put the LU back on to maybe reverse my first mistake. Any advice or thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Control box in neutral, drop the lower unit, make sure it's in neutral and reassemble. I've never had a problem with all the water pumps I've put in. I hear Mercs are a PITA to do out of gear. Haven't done many larger Mercs though.

Have trouble with the drive shaft going into the crank, just reach up and wiggle the fly wheel. I've done many large hp OMC engines and used a remote starter button. Ignition off, starter button hooked to the solenoid, line everything up, quick bump on the button and up it goes.

Re: Prop spinning in idle, after new impeller

Okay got it fixed, figured I would share in case anyone else runs into the same problem. On my motor right in front of the water pump is a 2" metal piece i believe it's the gear shaft. Anyways you can turn this to find your forward, reverse, and neutral. So I turned it until prop was freely spinning(neutral) re-installed the lower unit with gear box in neutral and problem solved. Hopefully this helps somebody new to the boating world like myself.
