Hi, trying to help my dad. He is a retired vet and just bought his first boat (used). Its not as good as they said. It runs great on land with with muffs. When we take it out it won't idle. We can force in to gear and it runs fine no matter where the throtle is set. We checked compression its good. Changed the pulgs. cleaned the carbs. and replaced the valve seats and the floats. We also pulled the lower unit and looked at water pump looks like new. Was woundering if anyone might no of something else we can do. Thanks for any advice!:)

what were the results of compression test? Were the carb/s removed and any and all core welch plugs removed pryor to soak in carb cleaner for 24 hrs? Were the carb/s blown out with compressed air? was a lync & sinc done? Post results! And welcome to iboats

lack of backpressure on the underwater exhaust makes it run better on land than in the water.

Add 150 or 200 RPM to the idle speed while its on the muffs, then fine-tune it on the water, in gear.

The compression on the top was 120 the middle was 110 and 112 on the bottom. The carbs were already clean they looked new but they wasn't the little needle in the vavle seat was sitcking so we replaced it and the vavle seat. we blew them out air moved threw freely and like i said it was nice and shinny looked like new. as far as the lync and sinc not sure what you mean this is all new to me i have been trying to learn as i go for my fathers sack he lives on disablity and doesn't have money for the shop he has always wanted a boat and he has been realy bummed out. Can you explain i don't realy know what i am doing. how do i adjust the rpms i have looked for something on the carbs i can't find any kind of screw to adjust i am trying to find a manuel but its hard for this old of a motor and i am going to have to order it and it will take time to get here. Thanks for all of your help

The idle adjustment is not on the carbs. It is a large knurled screw located just above the pivot of the throttle lever on the right side of the engine. The throttle cable attaches to the bottom of the throttle lever. Link/synch means adjusting the carb linkages so that the carb butterflies are all opening at the same time. Also ensuring the spark advance is correct at both idle and thottle open.

ok we adjusted the idle now it will idle with back pressure but when we put a load on it it dies. The butterflies are all opening at the same time or at least it appears to be when i look threw the cover holes any other sugestions thanks
