Need help please!!!!!

I have a 2001 Johnson 50 hp 2 stroke motor. It runs fine and all at once it begins to shudder and vibrate and will only turn around 2500-3000 rpms. If you turn off the ignition and start it right back up, it runs fine and may run like that for hours and then without warning it will start again, turn it off and back on and it is fine. New primer bulb and plugs installed. Thanks

Sounds like you might be dropping a cylinder. Use an inductive timing light when the problem occurs and see if you are loosing spark on one cylinder. Might have an electrical component over heating and causing you to loose spark on a cylinder.

Could the VRO have anything to do with this?

I guess the fuel side of the VRO could be malfunctioning, but you didn't say anything about having to pump the primer bulb. Try pumping the primer bulb and see if it helps the problem.
