Well i dont have the milltary background, but my dad had me shooting ever since i could pull the trigger. The biggest i've in high powered is a .338 win mag. MY kids have all shot the 22. In fact my 9 year old is planning to hunt this year and take his first deer, Going to let him use the wife's .243 My oldest wants to bow hunt... well see

I hope im not thread stealing, not my intent:D

Not really that much ... I've shot it and with the muzzle brake it doesn't kick that much worse than a 30.06. The price ... welll ...

I had my 12 yo out shooting the big rifles the other weekend. It's the first time he's taken on my Ruger .243 (did pretty good with that one), but I have a Remington .300 Savage that was my Great Grandfather's - that one still pack too big a whollop.

Glad you're enjoying it ... I remember how amped my dad was when I would go shoot with him.

Move him up to the bigger ones by starting with a good old 12 Ga shotgun. A single shot will kick like a mule!

Yeah, maybe my Winchester pump 12 ga., the dbl bbl coach gun is to wicked though, weighs like 3 lbs, no butt stock pad :)

You and your boy might enjoy trap/skeet/clays. Lots of fun breaking birds and reloading shells.

Re: loving it that NOW my son wants to shoot my big rifles!

We started the 22 last week, next step will be a 410. He's not ready for the 12g, 35, 30.06 or the 50 cal. black powder.

Or maybe I'm not ready for him to try. I don't want to take his shoulder off and get him flinching.

He's asking for a haircut, , that would blow my doors off if my son asked that.

Good luck shooting.

Very cool.

Im the black sheep of the family, not a lot of interest in guns from anyone but me. Would have been great to learn the basics from dad, and perhaps how to gut a deer, but I had to learn all that myself.

The 12 gauge thing ya I remember. I was about 12 and got my first chance to shoot a bigger gun. It was an old with two barrels and two triggers. He loaded both barrels. You got it I pulled both triggers at once. Put me on my but and the guy caught the gun as it flew.

Family shooting is fun and plan to introduce my 14year old into trap shooting this fall.

Re: loving it that NOW my son wants to shoot my big rifles!

My son is 10, and has his own 22, a Marlin 60C. He loves it, and has become quite a good shot with iron sights. So for his birthday I'm moving him up to a scope for it. Everytime we go to the range he wants to "try" the bigger guns, but freely admits that he's not ready for the full power 9mms or major rifle calibers. He did shoot one of my AKM's once, but he's biding his own time. Very proud of that young one.
