I have been given a 6HP 6504RC (1975 I think???) Evinrude. Can I adapt a mercury gas tank to work with this motor? Is it as simple as changing the motor fitting on the gas can?

Sure, just put a merc male tank fitting on a fuel line with a female OMC fitting for the motor. I actually like that setup for the winter because I think the merc fuel line fittings are less likely to break due to brittleness in low temps.

Yep, it'll work. All you have to do is change the fitting on the fuel line that connects to the motor. I have seen mechanics who have one fuel tank with a three way connector. One line goes to a Merc, one to OMC and the other goes to a Chrysler. Pretty cool huh? Motors with fuel pumps are easily adaptible with each other.
