Power Trim Pump Motor Issues

I have 1977 Mercruiser 228 that have replaced with a 350. The power trim pump motor worked for a few seconds and then stopped. When I pushed the, I believe, the bottom button (In) a looked under the dash and saw a little smoke and spark. I took the pump motor off and it was grimy and corroded, but when I took it apart, specifically the commutater end plate, I noticed there was a wire, Service Manual 2 calls Jumper wire, that was not connected to anything. Should this wire be connected to something, the rivets on brush assembly plate, etc.? The manual seems to show it soldered to something, but I can't tell from the black and white 1970's pictures. I am debating whether to take the motor to have it rebuilt, is it worth it? Should I solder wire to correct location, clean and use if it works? Please advise.

Thanks

Ayuh,... Ya can buy a brand new complete pump for 'bout $300....
And,...
With that new pump, ya can ditch the reverse lock on the transom...

I have came to the conclusion, for the long-term, new is the way to go, but, just for curiosity sake the "jumper wire" is related to the reverse lock on transom?

Thanks Bond-o
