Hi, I need some help with my 1988 SunRunner 225. I have a Volvo Penta 225 E engine coupled with a 275 A outdrive. My outdrive is toast. I have been looking for a complete replacement but have not found any with the "A". So what is the difference between the 275 and 275 A? Also, I have read of others swapping their 275 with a 280 and even a 290 DP. Is this true, and is it a direct bolt on?

Welcome.

I don't know the difference between the 275 and 275A, could just be the gear ratio, but thats just a guess. From what I've seen, most of the 275s seem to have been used on the 4 cylinder engines so make sure your replacement has the correct gear ratio. 1.61:1 is what you need. A 280 may bolt up, but again I'm not sure.

The gear ratio is 1:61:1. I found a 275 of same year from a V-8 motor. But don't want to sink that much money unless I know for sure it fits.

After looking at the drive it appears the gear set in the lower unit are fine, the gear ratio is determined by these gears? correct? Can I use another outdrive and replace the lower unit gears with mine? Are the upper and intermediate the same? I can pick a 275 or 280 up for a decent price but there out of a 4 cylinder engine.

Swapping gears is not for the inexperienced. You're better off finding a complete used outdrive, IMO.

I am a auto mechanic by trade, 11 years before changing careers, still have all the tools. Not claiming to be a boat mechanic but I think I can handle it. Just trying to save some money. I would like to find a complete drive, but the only one I found was $1600.00
