I have a 1990 wellcraft eclipse xl with a mercruiser 4.3 and mercruiser outboard. Whatever side that I turn the wheel to the boat flops over to that side. When Im making a left turn especially, it actually scares me quite a bit because it leans so hard it feels as though the boat is going to flip. I can balance the boat by turning the wheel slighting to the left or right (which ever side it is leaning to) and it will straighten up but then pulls to that side. The torque tab (i guess thats what its called? its the tab above the prop) was broken off when i purchased the boat. It did this before but was no where near as bad, then it seemed to just lean a slight bit when going straight. Recently I lost one of the stabalizer tabs for my hydrofoil, could this be the problem? Excuse me for lack of better terms, I know nothing about boats, and honestly probably have no business owning one. But, I enjoy the water so there ya go. Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Leaning while steering.

First, you need to remove or replace the hydrofoil fin, You have to have both or none. Second the torque tab, or trim tab, must be replaced with a new one. Then adjust it to the side that steers hard. It may take a few adjustments to get it right. Your boat should steer easy both ways, and be able to let go of the wheel at WOT, without it pulling to either side.

if ya don't have power steering. ya need the trim tab. see the attachment for which way to adj. basically, turn the tab in the direction it's easy to steer.
also. this adj. is only good at one speed, one kinda load, and one trim setting. when operating at that speed, trim and load. the steering wheel should turn about the same to either port or starboard. any other speed, load or trim, and torque steer will show itself.

take the broken pieces of the hydrofoil that are still attached and remove them. go boating and see what the ramification is. to ea. his own. personally, i'm not a fan of a hydrofoil on an i/o. fwiw. when (years ago) i was running a foil. it broke off part of it too when i hit a uso. it also broke my cavitation plate on my drive.. that bummed me out...

as for the lean. how's it sit when static? level in the water? if not. adj. load to compensate.

as for the lean into turns. my boat does it too. specially when i'm only on plane a little and i turn hard. faster i go, less i lean.

imho. some boats lean, some don't. mine does and i live with it. or don't turn so sharp, or go slower when i'm gonna turn, or faster...
