What type of gear oil are you guys using? Also, do I have to mess with shifter stuff when I remove the lower end to replace the impeller? Motor is a 79 johnson 150 with a 20" shaft.

85-90W marine gear oil for your 150, gay or straight. :)
Yes you will have to disconnect the shift linkage to drop the lower end.
