i have a suzuki dt30
2 cylinder 2 stroke
year 1983
engine serial number 03001 304012
electric start longshaft .
I am trying to fit a rev counter (tachometer) to keep a check on revs ,but not having much luck.
From what i gather i need to put positive to the + and negative to the - and yellow to the pulse.
BUT how do i know what to set the tacho to ?
Ive been told my engine is 4 poles ????
but im confused about what to set the tacho to...there is just the numbers 2 & 5 & 6 on
the tacho sticker.
photo below of tacho.
this was supposed to be from a jiohnson 140 v4 and a working tacho, but im not so sure now.
any help with this would be very good.

Hey phill! The connections you mentioned are correct for Suzuki engines and gauges. Should be the same with this tachometer, too. Not quite sure but is there a switch under the black tape below the 2/5/6? In some kind of tachs you can switch to the right number of cylinders you are using...

Re: 8000 rpm tacho for suzuki ?

There is a screw with a cut in the middle so i can switch from no 2 to 5 or 6.
But what exactly do i switch to ? what number ?
I was hoping to see number four (4). for 4 poles etc, but,2, 5 and 6 is confusing.
FROM WHAT I GATHER, MY ENGINE IS 4 POLES.
SO WHAT NUMBER ON THIS DO I SWITCH TO ?

phill:confused:

Hej phill. What wiring do you have for the tach? Usually Suzuki ignition + is gray, ground is black and the tach pulse comes from yellow. These should come from your remote if so equipped.
I'm not sure about the 4 poles but if it is 4 poles the tach should be working with the #2 position.

Cheers fabbe2
Thats what i needed to know, ther number to switch it to.

Ill give it a go hopefully tommorow.

Not got genuine suzuki cable from engine to dash. far to expensive.
i know what wires on the engine are for, just wasnt sure about the tacho.
Im hoping its not a dead tacho ?

just want to make sure im getting top revs and not going over etc.
plus good to use for any remedial work that might need doing in the future
