Our outboard engine is having idling problems and the dealership has not been sucessful in resolving the issue. The engine starts great and idles normally. Aftering running for about 15 minutes the engine will not drop back into idle. It either drops to 1500 rpm or 2000 rpm and decends to 1500 rpm. After running at 1500 rpm, the engine begins to stall and die. The engine restarts fine, but many times it will ramp up to 2500 to 3000 rpms and hold. I have to cut the engine off and it will generally reset to 1500 rpms (still too high) with the same stalling issues. After resting for several hours or overnight (consistently), the engine will idle normal again.

I checked the fuel filter. It is brown/orange? Is this normal?

Otherwise, the engine runs great. Any suggestions before returning to the dealer. The engine has been properly winterized by the dealer since we bought the engine new.

Hi Kenneth,

It sounds like you have water in your fuel and the brown and orange sediment is water. This will cause expensive problems and break downs if you dont look into it before taking it out again. Remove your engine cover and follow the fuel line to the water separator, unscrew the filter and empty the water out. Empty your fuel tank and refill with fresh fuel noting how much water is coming out of the bottom of the fuel tank. The water is heavier than the fuel and you must empty the tank completley.

Regards,

Adrian
