My 1979 55 hp evenrude out board runs great when we get it up and running but when slow down to crab it shuts off and sometimes when I shift from neutral to forward or reverse it shuts off. Any advice would be appricated.

Hey Dave Wetten

Fuel delivery / starvation it sounds like. Also what year and model number? So I can look up parts?

1) Rebuild fuel pump
2)Clean rebuild Carbs
3) Run Champion plugs
4) Check inline filters/water seperators and if suspect buy new ones

Also I have a rubber "boot" section of my top cylinder spark plug one time crack and let some of the spark ground out. Which made the top carb flood. But the sound the engine made when it did this was way diffrent then just bogging down from fuel starvation/delivery. You can tell by the sound when the engine acts up if its spark or fuel starvation.

I would while your doing all this pick up some cheap in line psark testers and check the spark while it give you these syptoms. Like this one.

BTW, Evinrudes have their own section above "Other outboard brands" section.

Let me know what you find or think.

Thanks,

Carbs kit (Gonna need 2)
http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-7222&ptype=&Engine=&Model=

Fuel pump
Cant find a rebuild kit yet, give me more time.
Here is whole brand new unit
http://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=SIE18-7352&ptype=&Engine=&Model=

Use
SPARK PLUG CHAMPION QL77JC4

Also check to make sure you primer thing you pump to prime the carb is in working order. Should pump up and get hard, and stay hard. If it deflates theres either a air leak some where or the check valve in the primer is bad. Replace if so.

I have a 1976 and a 1977 Evinrude 55's. They are tanks and last forever if not abused and you give them what they need when they need it.

Thanks,
